About this Item
Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius & Cornelis Claesz., [1595-]1606. A double-page engraved map of ASIA (14 1/4 x 18 ½ inches) in fine condition, with FULL ORIGINAL HAND COLOR and full margins. From the 1606 Latin edition of Mercator's "Atlas Sive Cosmographicae Meditationes De Fabrica Mundi Et Fabricati Figura" (VAN DER KROGT 8000:1A). The map is based on Mercator's world map from 1569 and includes the fictional Terra Australis as well as the semi-mythical Straits of Anian believed to be a maritime route connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans (the Bering Strait was discovered in 1728). The name likely appears for the first time on a 1562 map by Giacomo Gastaldi. "The present map of Asia was part of group of four additional maps [which] all appeared in the first complete edition of the Atlas published after Mercator's death and were drawn by his son and grandsons.".
