About this Item
Printed wrappers, stapled, 8vo, pp 25-45. From the text: "Since the publication of my critical biography of George Darley in 1928, certain documents of importance connected with the poet have come to light. This article, indeed, is a necessary footnote to my book. By the kindness of Mr. Percy J. Dobell I was allowed in 1934 to examine the originals of several letters written by Darley to Allan Cunningham. These were first printed by his father, Bertram Dobell, in The Athenceum, and reprinted by me from that periodical as the letters themselves were not then available. .More important are those documents concerning Darley that were among the papers of John Taylor the publisher sold at Sotheby's in 1933. These papers consisted partly of correspondence, some of it connected with the London Magazine and its contributors while it was owned by Taylor and Hessey. They included nine letters from Darley to Taylor (now in my possession), and two prose MSS. Of Darley advocating a scheme for teaching the classics from texts with interlinear English versions, following " the principle of Locke's system." Of these prose MSS. More will be said later in a footnote to one of the letters. They are only of moderate interest. The letters are the main quarry." Staples rusted, wrappers browned, otherwise Good.
