Cycling : an illustrated weekly. Volume VIII, nos. 83 (21 July 1894) to 208 (12 January 1895). Edmund Dangerfield, 1894-1895. Hardback, VG, in Good binding. Black cloth, bumped to corners, with various small marks and a larger blotch to front. Binding strong. Front pastedown with printed ex-libris label and penned signature of Raphel M. Thoburn. 500pp., b/w illustrations throughout. Occasional two-colour printing. Contents clean and bright. The volume is particularly noticeable for the number of inserts bound in, including postcards, cycling event and concert programmes, a handwritten price list, correspondence and subscription acknowledgement letters, some with franked penny lilac stamps. Cycling Weekly is the world's oldest cycling publication, first published by Edmund Dangerfield as Cycling on 24 January 1891 It briefly became Cycling and Moting in the 19th century when car-driving "moting" looked like it would replace cycling.
