About this Item
This is the June 1896 issue of "The Book Buyer", which announced on each cover that the magazine was "A Summary of American and Foreign Literature". This issue is particularly rich, not only in textual content, but, also, in illustrative accompaniment. The issue starts out with an biographical account of Henry M. Field. Then, paging through the issue in the order in which they are presented, we find article on Henry Cuyler Bunner (H. C. Bunner : poet and humorous short story writer , who had recently passed away. Next we find a generous article on Kenneth Grahame, author of the beloved "Wind in the Willows". At the time of this article he had yet to write that immortal story, and the piece covers fairly closely his career to date (1896). Next we are treated to an article by Percival Pollard, on book illustrator Orson Lowell, which is accompanied by several of his pictures. Next we find Madame Blanc writing about author Octave Thanet (Miss Alice French). Thanet , once forgotten, has been rediscovered by persons interested in older feminists and women authors. There is an extensive article on a forgotten author : Louis Becke and his South Sea Stories. Perusing this made me want to read Becke's stories. Lastly, as goes the accounts on authors and illustrators, is a piece on that old stand-by, Captain Marryat ("Captain Marryat Again"). Aside from Marryat, each of the articles has a portrait of the subject. Interspersed throughout are many other literary articles and tid-bits, including Louise Stockton's "The Reading Club" and a generous number of book reviews. ******************************************* The cover design for "The Book Buyer", which remained the same through each of its issues, was drawn by American artist Will H. Low (Will Hicok Low).
