This biographical essay traces the youth years of the famous art and cultural historian Aby M. Warburg (1866-1929) using numerous, mostly unpublished sources. It shows the destinies of a Jew in the Empire, told by the student, by the "simple soldier" Warburg, whose diary notes and letters become the mirror of the fin de siècle.
