Cette comédie, le premier essai dramatique de l auteur, connut un vif succès. Elle eut 9 représentations successives dans sa nouveauté et fut représentée à Versailles, devant le roi, en 1765. "The scene is laid in Charleston, SC. This play marks the first appearance on the French stage of the American Quaker, in the person of Mowbrai, who paternalistically sponsors the marriage of the hero, Belton, with Betti, an Indian girl and a "good savage" figure. This play is an effective dramatic juxtaposition of the themes of the Good Quaker and primitivism." (Echeverria and Wilkie 764/2).
