Synopsis
In 2003 I went to China. I stayed in Changsha, Hunan, where I could work at the Hunan Agricultural University. I stayed there for one and a half year. In 2004 I went to Lijiang, Yunnan, where I could start working at the ‘Tourism and Culture College of the Yunnan University’. I stayed there for 4 years. Here I decided to write this book, in order to get people, working in hotels and/ or restaurants, more acquainted with the English language. In 2008 I went back to Changsha, where I could work at the Changsha Medical University. Since June 2010 I live in the G.T.A.,Ontario, Canada. The English language is especially in hotels, guesthouses and restaurants important, because many people from abroad, who come to visit China, for making a tour through China, or for business, don’t speak Chinese-Mandorin. In this book I also have put in the so-called ‘PinYin’; the Chinese characters in alphabetical script, so people who go to China for visiting or for business, may try to speak some Chinese-Mandorin themselves, which might be favourable for you. In this book I will take you with me on ‘a tour’. I will give attention to several aspects which are important for hotels and restaurants. You can find things about the ‘Room Reservation’, about the ‘Arrival and Greetings’, the ‘Checking-In’, the ‘Reception’, about the ‘Guiding Guests to their Rooms’, the ‘Restaurant’, about the ‘Bar/ the Lounge’, ‘Information’, about ‘Complaints’, ‘Maintenance’, about ‘Paying the Bill’ etc. I will do this in the several chapters. In each chapter there will be ‘Mini dialogues’, ‘Situational Dialogues’ and important ‘Words and Expressions’. Furthermore I will give you extra words and expressions that might be helpful in your speaking and talking Chinese-Mandorin, to people working in the hotel you are staying and/or restaurants. Besides that, in every unit there are also the so-called ‘useful sentence patterns’. Next to these important and interesting topics for Hotels and Restaurants, I also will talk about the more ‘Daily Chinese’, like ‘Talking about the Weather’, or the ‘Time and Dates’, or ‘Showing the Way’, ‘Making Suggestions and Offers’, ‘Making Apologies and Replies’, or ‘Making Telephone Calls’. I hope you will enjoy reading this book and I hope it may be helpful to you in having good results while you are staying in China, the ‘land of the Dragon’.
