About this Item
The only genuine and authentic account of the life and memoirs of that surprising and wonderful man Henry Jenkins. of Ellerton upon Swale. who lived to the amazing age of 169 years. by Mrs Ann Saville Saville's account 1st published by Sir T. Robinson in the Philosophical Trans. of the Royal Society, 19, 1696. Publisher: Gilbert & Rivington, c.1840 (possibly 1831). A small volume 13.3cm, 5.25 inches, tall, bound in half green leather over marbled boards. Good condition. Binding rubbed, hinges cracked but boards still firmly attached, owner inscription from the 1840s on the endpaper and first page, handling marks and old repairs throughout, with occasional minor loss of text. Lacks all before the first text page (page 5) the leaf with pp 65 and 66, and the final leaf. Please see the photos, more available at the bottom of the listing. This is a very rare item, JISC hub listing only two dissimilar copies, both held by York Minster. This copy has more pages than the 1840s copy held by the Minster, but is presumed to be by the same publisher. The contents are Mrs Saville's account of Jenkins, who is said to have lived to 169 years old, dying in 1670, and some of his great cures, Rules for the preservation of Health and Longevity by Sir Richard Jebb, late Physician to the Royal Family; A collection of Valuable Recipes, the greater part of which were given to Mrs. Saville, by Henry Jenkins; A Gardening Calendar for every month in the Year with Medical Instructions &c. The book appears to have been originally bound as a pamphlet, with stab marks from that binding throughout, but was valuable enough to have been rebound and repaired. In spite of Mr Jenkins alleged longevity, it is not recommended that any of the advice in this book be followed. 13.3cm, 5.25 inches, tall, pages 5 to 64, 67 to 108. Seller Inventory # 001038
