About this Item
The first volume, landscape 30cm x 18cm full leather with gilt title to upper board light rubbing to the edges. Approx. 92 pages mostly one side filled but occasionally both sides. Printed key to upper margin with date, place, sportsman names, types of game birds, wildfowl, ground game identified, ruled in red columns with total to lower margin the opposite page blank the book covers 1879 through to 1896 neatly recorded in ink in a legible hand. Beginning in 1879 in Mhow India going through to January 1883 recording snipe duck quail peacock and other birds, the opposite page are notes on hunting big game including tiger, bear, bison, etc initially to Anstruther on his own, in 1881 and 1882 hunting in Rajpur and Kanara with several guns all named again bagging tiger bison and a variety of deer a few related printed cuttings neatly tipped in, a note at the bottom of the page "left for England". From 1883 to 1885 shooting game birds including grouse + ground game opposite the first entries is a tipped in photograph of a house "Old Crarae" Argyllshire where some of the shooting takes place. The bags mostly under 50 with occasionally over a hundred 1 to 5 guns named, to the bottom of the last page of entries for January 1885 "left for India". The next entry is for October 1885 Lucknow through to 1888 in the previous format when last in India there also is a tipped in photo of a" line of Elephants in the Terai." Leaving in 1888 for Scotland and staying till January 1889 before leaving for Lucknow. Staying in India till December 1890 mostly shooting birds there are summaries and details on the blank pages. Returning to England shooting through to 1896 the bags increase and shooting in Scotland and various locations in England. The second game book large landscape 8v0 bound in ½ leather gilt title to upper board, cloth covered boards the cloth old damp staining the contents clean. The game book commences in 1935 following virtually the same layout as the first but only covering Woolston running through to 1941 some 12 double sided pages up to a maximum of 9 guns but mostly under 6 with bags up to 100 but mostly under 50. The 3rd volume large 8vo bound in ½ tan calf showing rubbing and wear split to lower rear edge approx. 12 cm, 44 pages + blanks circa 1890. The book is not a game book as the others but a collection of related cuttings possibly from the field? with a handwritten index to the articles. Some handwritten observations on hunting and information on travel in Persia. Includes loose letters regarding shooting etc and some loose ephemera, also some unrelated drawings. The joints broken and text block holding on ties page 1 is loose. £750. Seller Inventory # 22430
