Item description from seller

Printed wrappers with flaps, 8vo, 23 cm, 66 pp. Contains two papers: 1. Defoe's use of irony, by M.E. Novak; and 2. Swift's use of irony, by H.J. Davis. From the introduction: "The two papers printed here are as fine as any which have appeared in the series, and they were acclaimed by members of the seminar. . Professor Novak takes issue with the critics who assert that Defoe was no ironist and that he was by training and tempera- ment unfitted to wield the delicate steel of the ironic thrust And Professor Davis, out of the depth of his learning, has developed a case against that school of critics who have tended to read Jonathan Swift, as author, out of his greatest satires. Doubtless, readers of his paper will be as fascinated as were the members of the seminar with his suggestion about the ambiguities in Gulliver’s famous statement about his wife and children, and with the report of Swift’s cryptic comment on the Nicene Creed." Wrappers browned at edges, otherwise near Very Good.
