FOUNDATIONAL PAPER IN STEREOCHEMISTRY. This work is part of Pasteur's groundbreaking series on tartaric and paratartaric acid, in which he established the molecular basis of asymmetry in certain crystals and the phenomenon of racemization. Early in his career, Pasteur s investigation of tartaric acid led to the first resolution of what are now known as optical isomers, paving the way for the modern understanding of molecular structure in organic compounds. Pasteur s guiding principle throughout his career was that optical activity was characteristic of organic compounds and generally absent from inorganic substances. Convinced of a connection between molecular and crystalline asymmetry, he was particularly fascinated by the fact that optically active compounds such as tartaric acid with its asymmetrical crystals were exclusively produced by living organisms. This led him to hypothesize that natural asymmetrical forces, such as the Earth's rotation or magnetism, might underlie the handedness observed in biological molecules. During the late 1840s, Pasteur conducted an extensive series of studies exploring the relationship between optical activity, crystalline structure, and chemical composition especially in tartaric and paratartaric acids, of which this paper is a key contribution. His findings highlighted the profound link between optical activity and life, inspiring new methods and approaches to chemical structure and composition. As the Dictionary of Scientific Biography (DSB 10) states, "Pasteur opened the way to a consideration of the disposition of atoms in space, and his early memoirs constitute founding documents of stereochemistry." In 1849, while investigating tartaric acid, a substance found in the sediments of fermenting wine, Pasteur encountered a puzzling problem. Scientists at the time used polarized light to study crystalline substances, observing that dissolved tartaric acid rotated the plane of polarized light. However, paratartaric acid another compound with the same chemical composition showed no such effect. While many assumed the two substances were identical, Pasteur s meticulous observations revealed otherwise. Examining paratartaric acid under a microscope, he discovered two distinct types of crystals, which, though nearly identical, were mirror images of one another. By carefully separating them into two groups and dissolving each separately, he demonstrated that both solutions rotated polarized light but in opposite directions. When mixed together, the effect was canceled out. This discovery demonstrated that chemical composition alone does not determine a compound s behavior its three-dimensional structure is equally crucial. Pasteur s pioneering work on paratartaric acid thus laid the foundation for the field of stereochemistry, fundamentally altering the way scientists understand molecular structure. Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Emerald Booksellers, New York, New York, U.S.A., without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
