First edition. [ii], iii, 527pp. Bound in half calf with marbled paper sides, all edges marbled, spine decorated and ruled in gilt. Text in Italian. Very Good+ with rubbing to calf along edges, front hinge a little free; clean, bright contents. An attractively bound volume. A rare account of the First Vatican Council, convened by Pope Pius IX in 1869. The author was an Italian politician (1829-1906) who wrote under the pseudonym Pomponio Leto after Italian philosopher Julius Pomponius Laetus who was also known as Giulio Pomponio Leto. It would be first translated into English in 1876.
