About this Item
Boston, crown octavo, two volumes: [xiv, [2], 17-431 p., frontispiece portrait and title page vignette; vii, [1], 9-497 p., frontispiece portrait, title page vignette, and publisher's ads]. ***CONTENT: Hugh Miller (1802-1856), was a self-taught Scottish geologist, philosopher, folklorist and poet, whose early employment as a stonemason sparked a passion for the study of geology. An enthusiastic fossil collector, Miller was also a devout evangelical Christian, and was skeptical that later species were descended from earlier forms. Miller was a gifted wordsmith who made scientific observations accessible to the educated public. In his lifetime, he became celebrated across the English-speaking world. Chapters herein describe his youth and employment, his adversaries and advocates, the development of his character and spirituality, his literary and scientific maturation, the acclaim from his publications, and sadly, his eventual mental illness and suicide. ***CONDITION: This is a complete, near-Fine set, bound in the original brick-red cloth with gilt titles on the backstrips. The covers show only mild wear to the extremities and spine ends, spine lettering very legible. Joints and hinges solid, bindings firm. The text pages and illustrations are pristine: fresh, clean, and bright. No indications of previous ownership. An attractive set of an increasingly hard to find biography of the Scottish polymath. Not in BMNH. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost. Seller Inventory # OG5561
