The Guide is a story about a guide who is transformed into a holy man. Based in the fictional town of Malgudi, this story involves love, faith, deceit, mockery, and humor, weaved around the characters in this book. The book has a unique style of narrating the story in a first and third person narrative.
Raju, the main character in this novel, is a corrupt guide who happens to meet Rosie, the wife of Marco the archeologist. Rosie is a great dancer, but is a neglected wife and Marco never appreciates her dancing skills. This paves way for Raju and Rosie’s illicit affair, and Marco leaves his wife. Rosie starts living with Raju and becomes a successful dancer with his support. Meanwhile, Raju commits an act of forgery and is sentenced to jail. When he * from imprisonment, he is mistaken to be a Sadhu by the villagers and he tries to maintain this image in fear of disgrace. But Raju, who has created a pious image amongst people, has to pass the real test of his life when he is asked by the villagers to save them from the famine.
