About this Item
Washington, 55 p., text figures, and 10 plates, including a double-page, colored geological map. ***CONTENT: Nantucket, a small island south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is a celebrated Atlantic summer resort for vacationers, with pristine, dune-backed beaches. This exceedingly scarce work by Nathaniel Southgate Shaler, a noteworthy Harvard geologist, is the earliest comprehensive report on the geology of the Island. Unlike the rocky mainland of New England, Nantucket is composed of sands, gravels and clays deposited near the terminus of massive ice sheets during the Wisconsin glaciation. Chapters within describe the topography of the island, the origin and geological structure of the deposits, fossils at Sankaty Head and elsewhere, post-glacial changes, recent modifications of the Nantucket coastline, the vegetation of the island, and more. The splendid colored map, unfolding to 11 by 9.5 inches, (which I have not opened fully in my photo to avoid damage) shows topography, kames, moraines and terraces, swamps and post-glacial deposits, roads and rail lines, Nantucket (town), Siasconset, and other cultural features. ***CONDITION: This report is complete and in near Fine condition, bound in the original printed-paper wraps. The wraps are mildly chipped at some edges, but largely complete; paper backstrip with some loss at the ends. The stapled binding is very firm. The text pages and illustrations are partly untrimmed and are immaculate: fresh, clean and bright. No evidence of previous ownership. This is a handsome copy - I have not seen another copy of this report for sale in several years. Nickles 934. BMNH 1908. International shipping will be extra for this report, but only at my cost.
