Item description from seller

FIRST EDITION IN BOOKFORM. 8 vo. Orig. cloth, rebacked with the original spine laid down. xx, (3)-785, (1, blank), (1)-64 pp. Diagrams in the text. Bookplate of the Norwich Union Life Insurance Society. A very good, clean and crisp copy. Augustus De Morgan (1806-71), the Indian-born English mathematician, made original contributions to mathematics in the fields of analysis and logic. "In 'The Differential and Integral Calculus' (1842) there is a good discussion of fundamental principles with a definition of the limit which is probably the first precise analytical formulation of Cauchy's somewhat intuitive concept. The same work contains a discussion of infinite series with an original rule to determine convergence precisely when simpler tests fail. De Morgan's rule. is proved rigorously." (D.S.B.). Scarce in original publisher's cloth.
