Containing in so many different columns, I. The liturgy of St. James as we have it at present, the interpolations being only printed in a smaller character. II. The same liturgy without these interpolations, or the ancient liturgy of the church of Jerusalem. III. St. Cyril's account of that liturgy in his Vth Mystagogical catechism. IV. The Clementine liturgy. V. So much of the corresponding parts of the liturgies of St. Mark, St. Chrysostom and St. Basil as may serve for illustrating and confirming it. With an English translation and notes, as also an appendix, containing some other ancient prayers, of all which an account is given in the preface. -- Compiled by Thomas Rattray, 1684-1743, bishop primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, and seen through press by Robert Lyon, of Perth. Rattray, mildly criticized by J. M. Neale (footnotes to History of the Holy Eastern Church, 1, 464f.) as `always suspecting interpolations' influenced the editions of the Scottish communion office by the later primus, William Falconer, of 1755 and the revision of 1764. The articles under which Scottish bishops consecrated Samuel Seabury in 1784 stipulated `as near a conformity in worship and discipline' as consistent, and Seabury's edition of 1786 underlies the American office of 1789.
