Item description from seller

First separate edition. 8vo. pp. 463-475; photo. illusts., sketch maps; very good in the original printed wrappers, previous owner's initials to upper wrapper and printed label inside upper wrapper, minor creasing. Swithinbank, a glaciologist, spent over a year at the Soviet Antarctic base Novolazarevskaya, "the only station in the Antarctic at the junction between a grounded and floating ice sheet". This article, which relates brief details of his personal experiences and scientific work, was later expanded into the book length account Vodka on Ice: A Year with the Russians in Antarctica (2002).
