First edition of the first of three novels Stevenson wrote with his stepson Lloyd Osbourne. This copy has the first state contents page, with "Contents" printed in large type with an ornament beneath. Osbourne began the story in 1887, with Stevenson taking on the novel and completing it in 1889. In a letter to Miss Ferrier in April 1888, Stevenson wrote: "The lad? Well, the lad wrote a tale this winter, which appeared to me so funny that I have taken it in hand and some of these days you will receive a copy of a work entitled A Game of Bluff by Lloyd Osbourne and Robert Louis Stevenson" (quoted in Prideaux, p. 72). The other novels the two collaborated on, The Wrecker (1892) and The Ebb-Tide (1894), were both set in the South Seas. Prideaux 29. Octavo (194 x 129 mm).
