A password for CATALYST Online is printed on a tab divider in every copy of the text.A LEARNING RESOURCE.
A unique section on Learning Across the Curriculum. This section begins the book with information on using writing to learn and writing online in college, as well as help for multilingual students.
An almanac with further resources for learning. The unique content in the appendix includes maps, timelines, and a glossary of selected terms across the curriculum.
A WRITING RESOURCE.
Critical thinking in Writing Papers (Tab 2). The coverage of the writing process begins with an introductory chapter on critical reading, reading from sources, understanding assignments and building an argument. Tab 2 also includes help with writing online particularly collaborative writing.
Guidance on Common Writing Assignments (Tab 3). This unique section demystifies college writing by offering guidelines and models for the specific kinds of writing that students encounter in college, particularly argumentative, informative, and interpretive writing (including writing about literature).
Case studies, lab reports, oral reports and PowerPoint, portfolio writing, and essay exams. With practical guidelines for writing these kinds of assignments in Chapter 13, A Writer's Resource provides a complete resource for students' work outside of the composition classroom.
Charting the Territory. In each section of the text, these unique boxes include information on how writing conventions vary from discipline to discipline, giving students a sense of how to adapt their writing for different audiences.
Writing Connections (Tab 4). This section connects college writing to writing at work and in the community. It includes chapters on service learning; writing letters to get action; and writing to get and keep a job, including common business formats.
A RESEARCH RESOURCE.
Critical inquiry in Researching (Tab 5). A Writer's Resource brings critical thinking into each step of the research process, with advice on posing useful research questions, using search engines efficiently, evaluating sources, and managing information.
Archive, field, and lab research. Chapter 20 provides guidelines for conducting primary research.
Research, ethics, and plagiarism. Tab 5 (Researching) includes a section on ethics in primary research and coverage of plagiarism as an ethical issue.
An index of discipline-specific resources. Chapter 23 helps students begin their research with sources that have already been checked for relevance and credibility. The discipline guide is also available on the E-Source, where the links are updated weekly.
AN EDITING RESOURCE.
Grammar and the editing process. A Writer's Resource gives students a helpful way to organize their editing and proofreading, beginning with issues of clarity and style, moving to grammar, and ending with surface concerns such as punctuation and spelling errors. Three tabs on editing encourage students to use a three-tier process: Editing for the global issues of clarity and style (Tab 10), editing for grammar conventions (Tab 11), and editing for correctness: punctuation, mechanics, and spelling (Tab 12).
