Offered is "The Worst Crime is Innocence," the text of a sermon given on September 10, 1961 by the Rev. Stephen H. Fritchman at the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles and published in mimeographed print form as the October 1961 Sermon of the Month by the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles. A stapled pamphlet measuring 7" by 8-1/2" and containing 16 pages including front and rear covers. A few brief excerpts from the Sermon, reading in short part: "It has been said by Bertrand Russell and others recently that within days, weeks or a few months we may all be dead. I hope no one here has left out of his or her calculations the reality of this awesome possibility. A person who has not actually come to first-hand terms with the possibility of his own death at any moment is ill-equipped indeed for living his life, be it long or short. I am giving no light-hearted sermonic placebo today. We are living at this hour on the brink of oblivion" - "Suggestions for Action in the Present Crisis" - "1. The pressing Berlin issue can and must be negotiated" - "2. Disarmament proposals must now, in the face of a very real danger of nuclear war, be discussed by both East and West powers immediately" - "3. Nuclear testing on all sides should be stopped immediately." Rear cover lightly edge-sunned. The REVEREND STEPHEN H. [HOLE] FRITCHMAN (1902-1981), author, liberal humanist, and social and antiwar activist, was the minister of the progressive First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles, California, from 1948 to 1969.
