Item description from seller

A substantial and influential mid-century anthology of mathematical thought, bringing together writings from antiquity through the twentieth century, accompanied by Newman's historical introductions, commentaries, and explanatory notes. Contributors include Archimedes, Descartes, Newton, Euler, Bertrand Russell, Henri Poincare, G. H. Hardy, John von Neumann, Alan Turing, and Claude Shannon. Subjects range from mathematical history, geometry, and statistics to physics, philosophy, computing, and the relationship between mathematics and society. Particularly notable is Volume Four's section on mathematical machines and whether machines can think, featuring foundational writings by von Neumann, Turing, and Shannon. Complete four-volume hardcover set uniformly bound in textured blue-green cloth with gilt spine lettering and distinctive mathematical emblems stamped in gilt on the front boards and spines. Housed in its original mustard-gold patterned slipcase. The copyright pages identify the work as originally published in 1956; "Seventh Printing, Cloth Edition." This is therefore a later printing of the original four-volume edition, not a first printing. Condition: Very Good overall; slipcase Good. All four volumes present attractively, with generally clean, bright interiors, sound bindings, and modest shelfwear to the cloth. Volume One has a conspicuous pale surface mark on the front board; other boards show scattered minor rubbing and small marks. No ownership inscriptions, underlining, or marginal annotations reported. The original slipcase remains intact and functional, with pronounced rubbing, scuffing, edgewear, and splitting or separation along portions of its exterior seams. One loose, folded handwritten note is laid in, containing a passage referencing the Iliad and the image of a worker testing a wheel; it is retained with the set as found. No individual dust jackets are present; this is a slipcased presentation. Volume Four reproduces Alan Turing's "Can a Machine Think?", Claude Shannon's "A Chess-Playing Machine," and John von Neumann's work on automata. These are especially appealing to readers interested in the intellectual origins of artificial intelligence, computing, and cybernetics. The physical production is also worth noting. The copyright page credits Brown Bros. Linotypers, Inc. for composition, Murray Printing Company for printing, and H. Wolff Book Mfg. Co., Inc. for binding. These credits document the collaborative New York bookmaking industry behind this ambitious mid-century publication.…
