Endpapers renewed., This is a rare large paper copy.First edition of what is disputed to be either the best or the worst of early modern Chaucer scholarship. This book marks the last in a 200 year tradition of printing folio editions of Chaucer, and the first in the tradition of printing Chaucer in roman type rather than in blackletter. Contemporary ruled calf, rebacked but rebacking failed and the front board cleanly detached, rear board interior joint weak but attached and sound. Old armorial bookplate inside front cover. Scattered minor foxing and soiling, very clean overall. The first Urry edition of Chaucer and the first edition not printed in black letter in folio (15 1/2" x 10"). A compendious achievement with additional tales never before printed (though all are apocryphal). In an Appealing and Complex Full Leather Binding: The fields of an earlier (apparent 18th century) dark brown calf leather set of boards have been laid and bound over a later (apparent early 19th century) tan calf leather binding, so that the overall appearance of the leather is two-toned. The Original letteringpiece from the earlier (dark brown calf) binding is retained to the spine. Additionally, a thin and deliberate margin of the tan calf binding rules the boards, and this frontier has been tooled and black stained all around with floral sprays, etc. All edges of the boards and spine are dentelle tooled/rolled and gilt. The spines in seven (7) compartments with raised bands. The letteringpiece reads "URRY'S CHAUCER" and the foot of th spine is dated 1721. The spines RICHLY GILT. Raised bands with a gilt spiral and feather motif applied. The compartments with symmetrical, central, outwardly radiating floral wreaths, all gilt. HINGES SOLID, LEATHER VERY SUPPLE. Copper-engraved frontis portrait of Urry by Pigné. Full-page portrait of Chaucer by Vertue. Title Page, Illustrated w/ vignette of Chaucer's Tomb. All the usual textal embellishments, including woodcut head and tailpieces, textual vignettes, and tale illustrations. 626 pages + all rear matter. COMPLETE, c. & p.
