In 1926, the year the US highway system was begun, Charles Gould, his wife, seven children and two of their spouses, set out from Moline Illinois to California. They travelled on an unintegrated set of highways and county roads (sometimes no roads) at a time when you could get a motel room that had room in it for your car. Based on Daddo s diary, augmented by recollections of the surviving children and the granddaughter (Pat Smith). Sketches by Charles Gould Jr., with numerous black and white photos.
