FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, First Printing. Octavo (8vo). [viii], 245 pp, [4] publisher?s advertisements. Publisher?s original green cloth, decorated in lighter green scrollwork to the boards and spine, with gilt lettering to the front board and spine.
One of Wells?s earliest novels, published in the same year as The Time Machine. The Wonderful Visit blends fantasy, satire, theology, and social criticism through the story of an angel accidentally shot by an English vicar and introduced into conventional Victorian society. The visitor?s bewilderment at human institutions, morality, class, and custom allows Wells to turn the fantastic premise into a pointed critique of late-Victorian life. A lesser-seen early work showing the social and philosophical concerns that would remain central throughout Wells?s career.
Contents clean, bright, and unmarked. Binding remains sound and square, though slightly cocked. Spine lightly tanned with wear along the edges; crown and heel with minor fraying and small chips. A Very Good copy of the First American Edition.
