WILDER, Thornton (1897–1975). The Woman of Andros. New York: Albert & Charles Boni, 1930. First Edition, First Printing. Octavo (8vo). 162 pp. Publisher’s original gray cloth, with the front board decorated in red and gilt and the spine lettered in gilt; orange endpapers and red top stain. In the original unclipped pale gray dust jacket printed in red. Published following the success of The Bridge of San Luis Rey, which earned Wilder his first Pulitzer Prize, The Woman of Andros is a novel inspired by Terence’s Roman comedy Andria. Set on the fictional Greek island of Brynos in the pre-Christian era, it explores love, duty, mortality, and the meeting of classical and emerging Christian moral traditions. Its dramatic source and classical setting reflect interests that would remain central throughout Wilder’s later work as both novelist and playwright. Contents clean and unmarked except for a previous owner’s name neatly inked on page 7. Binding remains sound and square. Light wear to the cloth extremities. Dust jacket remains complete, with a few small chips along the lower edge of the rear panel, a closed tear near the spine panel, and light general edge wear. Jacket protected in a clear archival cover. A Very Good copy in a Very Good-minus dust jacket. Reference: Edelstein A4a. [Attributes: First Edition; First Printing; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket.].…
