About this Item
Wide Angle Press, 2022, 132 pages, (8,5 X 8,5 inches - 21,5 X 21,5 cm), Hardcover Photographs by Jérôme De Perlinghi, Design by Peters Bernard from J. Perlinghi's Kichstarter Campaign: I have always loved square images shooting a lot of photographs with my Yashica Mat 124G. When Fujifilm came out with the X100 series, they included in their "S" model the one on one format. It became the drive to start this new project in the summer of 2015. I was looking for a new portfolio where I could record all the sights around me as a visual statement. It was clear that it would be a black and white essay. Why is so much fading away, could be the main question of the reportage spread over 6 years? The Wilson in Squares project complements my Wilson Project where I photographed for 30 months the people of the city. One portfolio is about people, the other one about the set where they live. Combined they represent two chapters but one artistic vision. All the photographs in the book were made within 3 miles (5 kilometers) of the Historic District, going in circles from month to month, year after year. As I live in the middle of the circle, never had it been easier for me to walk around: waiting one day for heavy rain or the rare snowstorm that would give the portfolio an extra edge. The same way, it was easy to play with the light or the darkness: waiting for the exact right second depending on the subject matter of the day. Last but not least, my fiery German Shepherd, Nealah, worked diligently as my assistant walking together close to 10 miles on shooting days, never tiring of getting the next shot. As with both my Shanghai and Chicago books that were published in 2020 and 2021, besides the camera in my hand, curiosity to look around every street corner or behind every wall corner became my main working tool. I am an explorer; every inch outside my house has become my land of adventures and travels. --- from an article in the WILSON TIMES Photography book captures 'Wilson in Squares' June 30, 2022 By Drew C. Wilson "First snow of the year in Wilson makes everything look very beautiful," photographer Jerome De Perlinghi said of his picture titled "Always Happy" from January 2018. Jerome De Perlinghi | Special to Wide Awake Jerome De Perlinghi walks 8 to 10 miles a day, most of them with his 10-year-old German shepherd, Nealah. Along the way, De Perlinghi has toted a camera. "It was an easy way to combine healthy living, walking, healthy living for the dog walking with me and still try to be creative with the photographs," De Perlinghi said. De Perlinghi is the artistic director and chief organizer for Eyes on Main Street Outdoor Photo Festival in Wilson, which is currently preparing for its eighth edition. For the last six years he has been documenting the city of Wilson. His new book, "Wilson in Squares," has just been published by Wide Angle Press. The black and white pictures, all square and edged by black borders, will be the subject of a six-week exhibit beginning Wednesday at the Eyes on Main Street Goldsboro Gallery at 126-128 Goldsboro St. S. in downtown Wilson. Jerome De Perlinghi Jerome De Perlinghi This is the ninth book for the 61-year old photographer. "It's my new home," De Perlinghi said. "I have been living here for 11 years." When he sees a potential subject for a photograph, if something is not right for the picture, it is no problem. "You can come back tomorrow, an hour earlier, an hour later, very early in the morning, very late in the evening," De Perlinghi said. "Or simply wait for the snow to come. I think that will look good with snow." That is a decision De Perlinghi has made a lot, as there are a number of pictures in the book of a snow-covered Wilson. There are no people on the streets in Wilson in the photographs. De Perlinghi said he had already spent 30 months photographing people in Wilson in his first years here. "Plymouth" is one of the photographs in Jerome De Perlinghi's new book "Wilson in Squares." Jer. Seller Inventory # 2022Perlpho
