Hardback. First Edition. Who's Who in Shaw. Slight shelf wear to back edge of D/J. Slight browning to back edge of D/J. With a Foreword by W. A. Darlington. In this fifth volume of the Who's Who series, Phyliss Hartnoll lists alphabetically all his characters - more than six hundred of them - providing for each a concise outlike of their personal qualities and their role in the play in which they appear. Though Shaw deliberately used his characters as mouthpieces for his own ideas, he never forgot the needs of the actor, and even where his didactic purpose is most evident, as shown by the intriguing sub-titles of his plays - 'a sermon', a demosntration', a revolutionary romancelet', 'a political extravaganza' - he remains, as the distinguished critic W. A. Darlington points out in his foreword 'completely actable'. This quality accounts for his preminence in the theatre; but the vitality with which he endowed his creations, spilling over from his own exuberant personality, brings them also to life on the printed page, as those who consult this Who's Who will soon discover. 245 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).…
