Contemporary dedication handwritten on title page and stamp from the London Mechanics Institution (established in 1823). Further stamp on last page. Some age related marking etc, generally clean. The poem was inspired by the local tradition of the White Doe and a ballad entitled the Rising in the North, an event that occurred in the reign of Elizabeth I of England with fatal consequences for Thomas Percy 7th Earl of Northumberland.
