Item description from seller

INSCRIBED FIRST EDITION [COLONIAL EDITION]. Straus was a prolific novelist and biographer; though not incredibly successful, which might explain his impetus to pen this dressing down of the publishing industry of the early 1930s. Straus’s provocative, tongue-in-cheek titular remark possibly plays on the old idea that the novel was a feminine form; the "whip" serves as a reality check for aspiring novelists navigating the commercial world of publishing. The book contains advice for aspiring authors with sharp observations on publishers, critics, and literary trends. Inscribed neatly by Straus to ffep to Alvin Pieritz with a recommendation to buy the American edition of this work, it contains an additional chapter on the American market. The book is only a ‘Colonial Edition’ for its sticker to the spine. BOOK: Publisher’s blue cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine, publisher’s embossed logo to front board, top edge a little dust-dulled. DJ: Dust jacket with some nicks and closed tears to spine ends, ‘Colonial Edition’ sticker to spine, a little rubbed to extremities. Uncommon thus.
