Clarke and Robert Heinlein, and some others excellent works like Ray Bradbury's brilliant Fahrenheit 451. Overall Condition - GOOD BOOK INFO Published in 1933 by Frederick A. Stokes in New York. First edition, first printing with 1933 date on both title page and copyright page in a first state dust jacket with 2.00 price on dust jacket and ad for "Flawed Blades" on rear flap. This is also arguably, and presumably, the first state copy of the book of three known variants and certainly the scarcest - red cloth with gold spine lettering and a book length that measures 1/8" higher than the other two, more common variants. Though no definitive proof of priority has been established. This is the source book for the 1953 sci-fi movie classic that bears the same name. THE STORY & INFLUENCE Sven Bronson, a Swedish astronomer working at an observatory in South Africa, discovers a pair of rogue planets, Bronson Alpha and Bronson Beta, which will soon enter the Solar System. In eight months, they will pass close enough for gravitational forces to cause catastrophic damage to the Earth. Men and women recruited by American astrophysicist Cole Hendron work desperately to build an atomic rocket to transport enough people, animals and equipment to Bronson Beta to try to stave off extinction. Beyond the aforementioned long-lasting influence on popular sci-fi giants of the '40s - '60s, When Worlds Collide also had an immediate impact. The themes of an approaching planet threatening the Earth, and an athletic hero, his girlfriend, and a scientist traveling to the new planet by rocket, were used by writer Alex Raymond in his 1934 comic strip Flash Gordon. The themes of escape from a doomed planet to a habitable one also can be seen in Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's 1938 comic Superman. CONDITION REPORT The book is in GOOD+ collectible condition.Colorful and unfaded boards. Front hinge a tad loose. A spot of soiling on spine else clean. Rubbing to extremities and some light fraying. Last few dozen pages with a clustering of foxing on fore-edge. Top edge of text block with light pencil scribbling else VERY GOOD. Text block is generally clean and bright with an occasional smudge or other sign of light handling. No stickers or bookplates. Lightly toned pages. The jacket is GOOD. Unclipped. Toned. Sun-lightened spine. Edge wear - chipping, creases and tears. A few areas with foxing. Archival book tape on jacket blind side where front flap meets front panel. Foxing and some spots on jacket blind side. An uncommon first printing in the rarest of the three variants and with its scarce first state dust jacket.
