Item description from seller

8vo, brown buckram cloth, gilt titles, [xx] 448pp. First Edition. Unpriced dust jacket. Contents clean, binding sharp and square. An extensive volume of correspondence between the American Trappist monk and his longtime friend the poet Robert Lax, who also became a monastic of sorts, retreating in the 1950s to a solo hermitage in Greece. The letters span three decades of friendship from school days at Columbia to an era of collaborative publishing and are interspersed with poetry, supplemented by an interview with Lax and a dedicatory piece of concrete poetry for Merton, with drawings by Emil Antonucci. A fine copy.
