Item description from seller

33 pp; 1 fig. Original wrappers. Bookplate of James Tait Goodrich tipped to verso of front wrapper. Very Good. First Edition. INSCRIBED BY HARVEY CUSHING TO HIS SISTER-IN-LAW FLORENCE CUSHING: "Florence Cushing/ with love from/ H.C." (see photo). Cushing's inscriptions are not always neat and sharp, but this one definitely is, maybe because he took special care inscribing to a family member. Florence Williams Cushing was the sister-in-law of Harvey Cushing. In 1886, she married Henry Platt Cushing (1860-1921), the brother of Harvey Cushing. Cushing Bibliography no. 224. "As if not content with having finished one large literary venture, immediately on his return he settled down to the preparation of an address (which turned into a small book) for the dedication of the new medical building at Western Reserve in Cleveland on 5 [sic] October. He entitled it 'The Western Reserve and its medical traditions.' The essay shows evidence of much patient research, but as with the 'Osler' it was obviously a labor of love, since there was nothing that stirred him [Cushing] more than the stories of his pioneering forebears on both sides of the family who, discontented with their lot in New England journeyed to the Western Reserve where they set up their own vigorous way of life, their schools, and their traditions in medicine. . . . There were many enthusiastic letters about the Western Reserve address. His friends in Cleveland were immensely pleased and Lewis Weed, an old Clevelander, wrote: 'My mother also read the paper with the greatest pleasure. . . . I was transported back to my boyhood, surrounded by all the old families, and somehow your words gave me the feeling that here in Baltimore I was far from home and I somehow felt that I belonged out there in Cleveland. When I read one of your papers or addresses, I think that you should do nothing but write: when I see you operate, I think you should do nothing but that; and when I see you experiment, I feel that you should do nothing else but experiment.' From Frederick Shattuck, 'I have just read, at one lick, your deeply interesting and well-executed address in Cleveland. It is a remarkable story, remarkably well told.' Dr. Shattuck carried the note to H.C. by hand, bursting into his office one Saturday afternoon to congratulate him personally and also to expostulate with the Moseley Professor of Surgery for having spelt the great Indian offensive weapon 'tommyhawk' ["tommyhawk" is on p. 6; it was corrected to "tomahawk" when the essay was reprinted in Cushing's collection of essays Consecratio Medici (1928). (Fulton, Harvey Cushing, pp. 511-12; Fulton's complete discussion, which is worth reading in full, is on pp. 511-13).…
