West Melton: A History of the District to 1971. West Milton is a farming district situated fourteen miles west of Christchurch. Farm settlement dates back to 1863. The holdings vary in size and the type of farming carried out. The main products are sheep and fat lambs, wheat, small seeds and potatoes. Hot, dry summers impressed the early settlers as they were so different from what they had been used to in England. The first settlers and their families found themselves in an environment that taxed their intellectual powers. We owe much to these men and women who left their homes and families in the old world. They travelled in frail sailing ships, on journeys of up to five months, and started afresh in this new, almost unknown land. Weight 0.2 g size 225 mm by145 mm. Seller Inventory # 000410
