1897 Softcover Theater Translation and Program. First Edition thus. The Wasps was the first Greek play to be performed in the New Theatre (previously known as The Theatre Royal) on St. Andrew's Street in Cambridge, England in 1897. It was performed in the original Greek. This translation by Benjamin Bickley Rogers has Greek and English texts on facing pages and was sold to the audience for two shillings each. It was printed for the Committee at the University Press and names of the cast members are listed. There was no director in the early days of this theater. A member of the Committee was designated as Stage Manager and handled the direction and staging of the plays. For the performances of November 19 through 24, 1897, the Stage Manager was H.J. Edwards, M.A. of Trinity College. Small softcover with a blue gray paper wrap cover; back of the cover is missing; chipping all along the spine. Previous owner's name neatly written at the top. 7 1/4 x 4 7/8 ; 119pp. Pages are immaculate; bright, tight, clean, and unmarked. Textblock binding is strong and sound. Greek plays were extremely popular at Cambridge and The Wasps was performed regularly until 1933 when the theater was sold and turned into a cinema. Please see all images.
