WALKING THE LINE Scenes from an Army Childhood. Kevin T. Brophy. Mainstream Publishing Co Ltd., Edinburgh. 1994 First Edition ISBN 9781851586387 190pp Illustrated Hardback. This mint unread copy is bound in cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine, tight, white, bright and square. The unclipped dust wrapper is in mint condition. Kevin T. Brophy spent his formative years in the married quarters of an army barracks on the edge of Galway, on Ireland's west coast. In a landscape dominated by men in uniform, the household he grows up in is dominated by his mother, and the book tells of the intense relationship between mother and son. The "line" is the railway path, linking home and barracks with the other world of town and school. The book is written from the child's perspective, with an epilogue written from the mature perspective of middle age. Ref RR3.
