About this Item
Hardback. A collection of real-life stories containing dramatic material. Each chapter is the record of a murder in which the leading part was taken by a woman; and the material, in many cases was presented here for the first time, and provides a fascinating glimpse into the dark recesses of the feminine mind. The author, a well-known criminologist, parades a terrifying gallery of women : Louise Vermilya, Annie Monahan, and that dreadful pair, the Flannagan sisters, business women whose job was to murder; but for sheer ruthless, cold-blooded efficiency Amy Dugan, with her Home for Aged People, must surely take precedence even in such dreadful company as theirs. There are those who killed not for money but for love; and there are yet again those for whom, killing seems to have exercised so horrible a fascination that they have embarked upon it for no reason whatever except to gratify an apparently irresistible desire. Finally there are those from whom it is impossible to withhold one's pity. Jeanne Weiss, who killed at the dictates of her lover, never ceased to loathe herself or the task which she felt she was powerless to evade; while Louise Masset, who killed the child she undoubtedly adored, is a genuine figure of tragedy. Also includes : Mrs. M'Lachlan, Lucia Battice, Margaret Lilliendahl, Alexandrine Vernet, Theresa Antonini, Cordelia Botkin, Ruth Snyder, Mrs. Fullam, Marie Boyer, Mary Blandy, Mrs. Manning, Kate Webster, Ada Le Boeuf, Lizzie Borden, Adelaide Bartlett, Madeleine Smith, Marie Girodin, Mrs. Maybrick, Katharine Nairn, Mrs. Dyer, Bertha Roche, Gabrielle Bompard, Constance Kent and Edith Thompson. 288pp. lge. 8vo. h/back.
