Add to basketSecond impression of the true first edition, with the no. "002" on the printer's page. ***A very good copy in silver-grey cloth-covered boards with silver and black titles to the spine and front board. The boards are clean, but there is a light stain affecting the top of the spine and rear board near the top of the spine. Very slight crease to the bottom edge of the rear board. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally near fine - nice and clean with no inscriptions. ***The book was produced without a dustwrapper - instead, there is a card wraparound band with a 'Winter' painting by David Hockney illustration. The band is very good, but there is a little rippling on the front panel, a small stain on the back panel, some creasing to the top of the spine area, and a couple of small edge nicks. ***224mm x 146mm. 322 pages plus a page of acknowledgements and thanks at the back of the book. ***'When four people, strangers and family, converge on a fifteen-bedroom house in Cornwall for Christmas, will there be enough room for everyone? Winter. It makes things visible. In Ali Smith's "Winter", life-force matches up to the toughest of the seasons. In this second novel in her Seasonal cycle, the follow-up to her sensational "Autumn", Smith's shapeshifting novel casts a war, wise, merry and uncompromising eye over a post-truth era in a story rooted in history and memory and with a taproot deep in the evergreen, art and love.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the wraparound band) ***A second impression of the true first edition of the second volume in the seasonal ?state of the nation? works by Scottish author Ali Smith. A good reading copy of this early impression. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Winter? Bleak. Frosty wind, earth as iron, water as stone, so the old song goes. The shortest days, the longest nights. The trees are bare and shivering. The summer's leaves? Dead litter.
The world shrinks; the sap sinks.
But winter makes things visible. And if there's ice, there'll be fire.
In Ali Smith's Winter, lifeforce matches up to the toughest of the seasons. In this second novel in her acclaimed Seasonal cycle, the follow-up to her sensational Autumn, Smith's shape-shifting quartet of novels casts a merry eye over a bleak post-truth era with a story rooted in history, memory and warmth, its taproot deep in the evergreens: art, love, laughter.
It's the season that teaches us survival.
Here comes Winter.
