First US edition of Larkin's third collection of poetry which helped "confirm" (Motion, 343) his reputation both in the UK and the US the noted poet Stanley Plumly's copy. Containing many of this best-known and most important poems (including the title poem), according to Larkin biographer Andrew Motion, "the truths [THE WHITSUN WEDDING] wrings [.] are abiding." Uncommon, especially as any kind of association. 8.5'' x 5.5''. Original red cloth. In original unclipped ($4.00) jacket. 46 pages. The poet Stanley Plumly with his inked ownership signature to the front endpaper. Some mild wear to cloth and trace sunning to top edge. Jacket lightly chipped, toned, with a few small closed tears and a spot or two of soil. Overall sound. Very good plus in very good jacket.
