About this Item
New York: Appleton, 1923. First Edition. Lacking front blank flyleaf, otherwise about Very Good cloth, in dustwrapper with tape repair at top edge. Stunning line illustrations by J. Scott Williams. A tale of "dreadful deeds of heroism" during the French Revolution; an intense swashbuckler. The son of royalist Conte de Jallais is kidnapped by the dwarf Lataupe, who raised the child, Jack-without-a-roof, as a Revolutionist urchin of the streets of Paris. The figure of Citizen-Deputy Timardier "who was so thin and dark and tall that he cast a shadow that men said was like unto the guillotine itself" is a notable addition to character-grotesques. An uncommon book. Seller Inventory # 5740
