Item description from seller

First edition. In contemporary (publisher’s?) leather, panels blind-tooled, spine gilt. Rebacked, later endpapers. Printed bibliographical note mounted on front pastedown. [24] 300 [i.e., 302] [18] p., and 10 engraved plates and 5 folding engraved maps and charts. First edition of this important contemporary account of an early circumnavigation of the globe. Written by William Funnell, who served as First Mate to Captain William Dampier on the ship St. George. The voyage took three years, started as a privateering adventure, organized by Dampier to plunder Spanish vessels and coastal towns in South America as actions of the War of the Spanish Succession. However, due to Dampier's poor leadership and a result of a mutiny, the Captain was left in Amapalla Bay, and Funnell with the remaining crew completed the circumnavigation. Funnel compiled his account of the events and published them in the present book. He provides a detailed account of the entire voyage, a critique of Dampier’s captaincy, excellent descriptions of the west coast of the Americas, and the Dutch East Indies, illustrated with five maps and a set of almost forty fascinating plates depicting curious specimens, and landforms. Ref.: Hill 64, Borba de Moraes I 333–4, Sabin 26213 . Ownership inscription of a woman on the title page: Mary Lawther, 1744. Minor toning. The world map chipped at the side edge. Traces of old restorations. Overall in very good condition. First edition. In contemporary (publisher’s?) leather, panels blind-tooled, spine gilt. Rebacked, later endpapers. Printed bibliographical note mounted on front pastedown.…
