About this Item
This book is "Vinegarroon : The Saga of Judge Roy Bean - The Law West of the Pecos" by Ruel McDaniels. It was issued in 1936 by Southern Publishers in Kingsport, Tennessee. This is the First Edition. The life of Phantly Roy Bean, Jr. (1825 - 1905) reads almost like a woolly wild west novel. His life story is full of so much extraordinary incidents as to beggar belief, this slim book purports to tell the story - and an outrageous story it is. As with so many individuals whose lives spread into folklore and legend, it is difficult to separate fiction from fact. But judge Bean did exist, and he did preside over his own self-proclaimed court, and, it seems, there is a large pile of factual evidence to back up even some of the wildest stories. This bok, however, seems to be a fictionalized account, since there is a large amount of conversation in the text. Vinegarroon, by the way, was the name of one of Bean's saloons - and that saloon was where Judge Bean held court - such as it was. He claimed to be THE LAW West of the Pecos. and I guess he was. Bean is popularly called "The Hanging Judge", but the reality, it seems, is that he only ever sentenced two men to hang. ************************************** TITLE : Vinegarroon - The Saga of Judge Roy Bean "The Law West of the Pecos" / AUTHOR : Ruel McDaniel / IMPRINT : Southern Publishers / PLACE : Kingsport, Tennessee / DATE : (1936) / EDITION : First Edition / STATUS : Out of Print - OP / DETAILS : Trade hardcover; 143 pages; 5" x 7 3/8'; pictorial tan, paper-covered boards and spine; black lettering stamped on spine; illustrated front cover stamped in black with lettering and picture of the head of Judge Bean, a law book upon which rests a noose and a pistol, and a panoramic picture of The Vinegarroon Saloon -Courtroom.
