Romanzo gotico e testimonianza dell'infatuazione orientalista dell'Europa a cavallo tra XVIII e XIX secolo, Vathek fu composto in francese nel 1782, e pubblicato per la prima volta, anonimamente e senza l'autorizzazione dell'autore, nel 1786 in Svizzera nella traduzione inglese di Samuel Henley. Il testo originale francese apparve pochi mesi dopo, con data 1787. Molti decenni trascorsero prima che il romanzo apparisse nella nostra lingua: questa Einaudi del 1946 � la prima edizione italiana, con traduzione di Giaime Pintor e testo introduttivo di Alberto Moravia.
