Item description from seller

On offer here: "Vanishing Trails of Atacama" by William E. Rudolph, published by the American Geographical Society as the report of Research Series No. 24, dated 1963 and the First Edition, with the same date on title and copyright pages. I own this book because it was my privilege as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Chile in the late 1960's to work in the Region that is the subject of this book. I was assigned by the National Forestry Institute of Chile to study the production of the pods and leaves of the local mesquite tree (Prosopis tamarugo) that was being planted there as the planned basis for a livestock rearing program. The Chilean National Development Agency (CORFU) established over 100,000 hectares of these mesquite trees in this area, a large salt flat between the Andes and the Coastal Hills. These areas had been the source of saltpeter or "salitre" in Spanish, Potassium Nitrate which was mined for making gunpowder. The mining operations were abandoned after World War II because they discovered how to make factory produced saltpeter for the same purpose. The tree planting cum livestock scheme failed because the huge monoculture of Tamarugo was attached by a Brucid beatle that ate the flowers and eliminated the pod production that was to be the main source of livestock fodder. Please see the photos of the Table of Contents for your further infomation. The book is nicely illustrated with 50 figures, mostly vintage b&w photos of the area. The endpapers are decorated with a map of the area. Condition: This book is in near fine condition. The plain paper dust jacket is near fine with some very minor wear to the spine tips. The hard covers are pristine (I know how to take care of my books). Inside, the only mark is my bookplate on the front endpaper. The interior pages and figures are clean and bright, without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…
