About this Item
A first impression of the first US edition, a Red Badge Mystery, published in the USA by Dodd, Mead & Company, New York in 1957. ***Near fine in blue cloth-covered boards, with silver titles and decorations to the spine. The silver is still beautifully bright. No bumps to the boards. Corners sharp. Cloth clean and unmarked. No creases. Internally also near fine, with no inscriptions. Pages clean and uncreased. No offsetting. No foxing. ***In a very good original printed dustwrapper. The dustwrapper retains the original publisher's printed price of $2.95. There is only slight wear and rubbing to the edges of the dustwrapper, which is complete with fresh and vibrant colours. Small nicks, rubbing and creasing to the edges, but with no tears or chips. No fading. ***210mm x 145mm. 182 pages. ***'The imprint of Dodd, Mead and Company has come to be a virtual guarantee to many readers, and the justly famous "8 points" observed in selecting the company's "Red Badge" novels are so excellent that they have become a sort of Baedeker for beginners.' - Howard Haycraft in Murder for Pleasure (Review quote taken from the back panel of the dustwrapper) ***'Ed Morgan had been appointed chief of police, following his father's death in a gun battle. The little boom town had long been riven by vice and graft; when Morgan arrested a notorious burglar, for instance, one of the city cops deliberately let him escape. This is the story of Morgan's challenge to Gus Helm, the gambling king who, with his hoodlums and henchmen, was the real power in the town. The struggle brought Morgan face to face with the treachery of one of his men and the death of another; with the contempt and misunderstanding of friend and enemy alike; and a final showdown with Helm that will bring the reader to the edge of his seat. The terrifying suspense that distinguished the authors' earlier "Floods of Fear" is still further heightened in this drama of "Violent City".' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***A first American edition, in the original dustwrapper, in very nice collectable condition. We also have listed a nice copy of the First British edition, published by Eyre & Spottiswoode in 1958. Classic pulp fiction from the 1950s. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 7739x
