A Victorian Anthology, 1837–1895, edited by the noted American critic Edmund Clarence Stedman and published by Houghton, Mifflin and Company (The Riverside Press) in 1895. This is a true first edition, first printing (bearing the Roman numeral date M DCCC XCV on the title page), presented in the publisher's rarest, top-tier deluxe catalogue binding. Contains the true first book printing of Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem, "The Last Chantey" (pp. 600–601), preceding Kipling's own collected publication (The Seven Seas) by a full year. Grouped alongside Kipling in the "Recent Poets of Great Britain" section are fellow icons William Butler Yeats, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Oscar Wilde. It features Wilde’s celebrated imperial elegy, "Ave Imperatrix", published the exact same year as his historic trial and imprisonment. Bound in premium full dark reddish-brown Levant Morocco leather, showcasing a beautiful, prominent grain. Features hand-tooled gilt spine compartments with raised bands and intricate corner accents. Interior Flourishes: Intricate, lace-like gold tooling (gilt dentelles) on the inner leather borders, opening to premium multi-coloured marbled endpapers. Heavy leather joints keep the heavy boards securely attached. Edges: Heavy, brilliant gold leaf to all three sides (All Edges Gilt / AEG) which remains highly reflective and exceptionally well-preserved. Complete with a delicate tissue guard separating two beautiful frontispiece photogravures: Queen Victoria and Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey. This volume features a neat, charming contemporary ink gift inscription on an early blank endpaper reading "Della - Christmas '95", proving it was acquired in its very first month of publication. The book is in Very Good to Near Fine antique condition. The leather retains a rich, supple texture with only minor rubbing to the corners and light shelf wear to the spine ends consistent with its 130-year age. The inner hinges are perfectly tight. The text pages are clean and free of foxing. bibliographies: Livingston 124, Stewart 147 (limited, large paper edition only), Ballard p. 230, Richards B18.…
