An important firsthand memoir of modern Iranian history by General Hassan Arfa (1895-1983), a senior Iranian military officer and diplomat whose career spanned the final Qajar rulers and the rise of the Pahlavi dynasty. Drawing upon his personal involvement in Iran's political and military affairs, Arfa chronicles the country's transformation from the late nineteenth century through the reign of Mohammad Reza Shah. His account covers the 1921 coup d'etat, Reza Shah's modernization program, military campaigns in Kurdistan and Lorestan, the Second World War, and Iran's changing international relationships. The narrative offers a valuable participant's perspective, while reflecting the author's openly favorable assessment of the Pahlavi monarchy. Original dark green cloth hardcover with gilt spine lettering, accompanied by the original dust jacket designed by Val Biro (1921-2014), the prolific Hungarian-born British illustrator and commercial artist. Biro is credited with designing approximately 3,000 dust jackets during his career, working for major British publishing houses including Collins, Hutchinson, Heinemann, and Hodder & Stoughton. His design for Under Five Shahs features oversized white typography against an olive-green field, contrasting black lettering, yellow horizontal rules, and a geometric ornamental device. The rear jacket reproduces a formal photographic portrait of General Arfa. Illustrated throughout with historical black-and-white photographs, including portraits of Qajar and Pahlavi rulers, Arfa's family, and the 1934 meeting between Reza Shah and Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Includes a foreword, chronological chapters, an appendix concerning tribal regions beyond central government control in 1921, and an extensive index. Copyright 1964; printed in Great Britain by R. & R. Clark Ltd., Edinburgh. The copyright page shows no later printing statement, consistent with a first-edition copy, although the printing cannot be conclusively established from this evidence alone. Condition: Very Good+ hardcover - Good+ dust jacket. The green cloth boards are notably clean and well preserved, with bright gilt spine lettering, light rubbing at the extremities, and minor shelfwear. Binding is square and sound. The top edge is darkened, with natural age toning to the other page edges and interior paper. Pages are clean and legible. A small handwritten '1.95' notation appears at the upper corner of the front free endpaper. The original Biro-designed dust jacket retains its striking green color and bold typography, with edge rubbing, corner wear, small chips and tears, and a diagonal crease near the upper spine/front panel.…
