Sure, you could take your quilt to a professional to be finished with a programmed long-arm design, but why not experience the freedom and customization of making your own quilt exactly how you envision it — with free-motion!
Free-motion quilting is the technique of stitching through the layers of a quilt on a sewing machine with the feed dogs disengaged. Without the feed dogs engaged, you're free to move the material around and stitch designs in the fabric however you like! You can stitch around design elements and motifs to echo or enhance each block, swirl and doodle randomly, follow specific design lines, or even "write" words with your thread. Overall, your finished project will become a truly custom piece!
Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Free-Motion Quilting is a must-have book providing invaluable information on finishing, including an overview on working with long arm, mid arm, and home sewing machines. While you probably don't own a long arm or mid arm, shops throughout the country will rent them to you, and knowing the ins and outs of using them lets you make the best use of your time! You'll also learn about threading, color selection, and ruler work, as well as find QR codes linking to helpful how-to videos. A dozen sampler blocks are also featured, each with a unique design that can be combined in multiple ways.
Free-motion quilting will make you as excited to finish your quilts as when you started them! With beautiful hand doodling, easy-to-follow, full-color step-outs, and even a gallery of Sherilyn's personal quilt collection, Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Free-Motion Quilting is a wealth of instruction and inspiration for quilters.
