10.75 x 7.5", original purple cloth with gilt lettering and illustration, 200 pp, illustration plates and illustrations within text. A book about the various imaginary weapons dreamed up by James Henry McLean, a self-proclaimed "projector, inventor and patentee," whose main business was the sale of patent medicines. These weapons included a "floating impregnable fortress", an "annihilating magazine cannon," an iron war ship, a pistol with 48 shots, and more. The weapons were supposed to be so powerful that they would result in a new era of peace. Includes mentions of the efficacy of some of these weapons were they to have been used in the Indian Wars. Riling 1070: "A fantasy of arms. Literally a book in the style of a patent medicine brochure, but applied to the consideration of arms rather than ailments." A nice copy with mild wear to covers, edges and spine tips, slight fading to spine.
