Five volumes. Washington, D.C.: Academy of American Franciscan History, 1966-74. First editions. Described by Msgr. Francis J. Weber as "the most singularly indispensable tool issued in the last quarter century for historians of American Catholocism," this work outlines in detail documents pertaining to the development of the Catholic Church in the United States between 1673 and 1844. The first and second volumes are inscribed on the front flyleaf by Kenneally to James Francis Cardinal McIntyre, Archbishop of Los Angeles from 1948 to 1970. The fifth volume is inscribed by Kenneally to McIntyre's successor, Timothy Cardinal Manning. Tall octavo. Original red cloth binding, with gilt stamping. Some offsetting from a newspaper clipping to p.x-xi in the first volume, with a related newspaper clipping taped to the front pastedown. Occasional minor wear and fading along the extremities of the boards; otherwise a very good set. Inscribed by Author. Seller Inventory # 63999
